Phantom Halo: DVD Review
Arriving on DVD this week is the crime-drama “Phantom Halo”, written and directed by Antonia Bogdanovich. The film stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Maze Runner), Luke Kleintank (Max), Rebecca Romijn (X-Men), Sebastian Roché (The Originals), and Tobin Bell (Saw).
“Phantom Halo” centers on Samuel (Brodie-Sangster) and his older brother Beckett (Kleintank). The siblings are barely scraping by, living hand-to-mouth and their father, Warren (Roché) gambles away whatever money they do come by. Samuel is a street performer and Beckett picks the pockets of those gathered around watching his brother recite Shakespeare.
When Beckett learns that his father has a substantial gambling debt, he partners up with childhood friend Little Larry (Jordan Dunn) to counterfeit money with a press that they stole. Naturally, Beckett himself gets in way over his head and his situation becomes increasingly more dangerous.
The film’s title “Phantom Halo” is actually the title of a superhero comic book that Samuel is obsessed. Thank’s mainly to the cast, “Phantom Halo” was a far more entertaining than I expected. I am a fan of Roché from his work on TV’s “The Originals” and here he plays another form of bad-father. This one is worth checking out.
