Phantom of the Opera: The Motion Picture (1989): Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on Blu-ray is 1989’s “Phantom of the Opera” courtesy of Scream Factory. This was Robert Englund’s first major step away from the iconic Freddy Krueger in the “Elm Street” series. Although it wasn’t a hit at the box office upon its’ release, it is still regarded is one of the more faithful version of the story. The soundtrack is also a favorite among fans.
For those who have never seen it, Director Dwight H. Little (Halloween: 4: The Return of Michael Myers) gave us more of a traditional horror film with his version of the classic story. Jill Schoelen was perfectly cast as the Phantom’s object of desire, Christine. The supporting cast that includes Bill Nighy, Alex Hyde-White, Terrence Harvey, and Mark Ryan are all great. Of course the make up by Kevin Yagher who also worked with Englund on “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2” is top notch.
There are times when it is really difficult not to see a little bit of Freddy in Englund’s performance. With his voice and of course partially burnt flesh make-up, Freddy tends to seep through. However, that doesn’t really take away from the film. I am pretty sure the producers wanted the movie to appeal to the “Elm Street” audience.
The Scream Factory release looks terrific and has some great bonus features including an audio commentary with Little and Englund. Fans of this version of Gaston Leroux’s story should definitely pick up the blu-ray.
