Road Games: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray/DVD combo this week is writer/director Abner Pastoll’s “Road Games”.  This is an engaging psychological thriller that is not only well acted, but also well paced.  Just when I thought I had a general idea of where the story was going, things took an unexpected turn and I am all for surprises.

Set in the rural French countryside, two hitchhikers have a chance meeting. Jack (Andrew Simpson) is traveling back home after having a terrible summer experience. Véronique  (Joséphine de La Baume) is heading wherever the road takers her.  The two hit it off instantly and enjoy each other’s company while trying to make it through the sun-drenched roads.

When Jack and Véronique accept a ride from Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot) things start to go south.  The stranger offers to take them to his home where they can get cleaned up and have something to eat.  Waiting for them is his wife Mary (Barbara Crampton) who seems uneasy about the house guests.  It doesn’t take long before Jack and Véronique  find themselves in a dangerous situation and they must fight to stay alive.

What I really loved about “Road Games” is that  Pastoll kept me guessing.  The set up seemed pretty straight forward but that isn’t the case.  Pierrot is easily the best part of the film, giving a quite unnerving performance.   If you like a good thriller, “Road Games” is for you.
