Something Wicked: DVD Review
Arriving on DVD this week is the thriller “Something Wicked”, directed by Darin Scott. Filmed back in 2009, this is the final movie for the late Brittany Murphy. Although Murphy has a supporting role, it is hard not to notice how sick she looked in her scenes. At times I wondered if they added her character’s substance abuse issues to the script just so her appearance and speech would make more sense.
“Something Wicked” is inspired by true events. Christine (Shantel VanSanten) and James (John Robinson) survived a terrible accident that left Christine’s parents dead. A year later the two are engaged to be married. James works at the mill and Christine is in college, and though it seems like their life is back on track, strange things begin to occur.
“Something Wicked” is pretty much a guessing game in which most of the time, things don’t seem to make much sense. Is Christine being stalked by masked figures or is it all in her head? Is someone trying to kill James? Is Christine’s older brother who also happens to be a cop one of the film’s wicked? Is the son of James’ boss behind everything because he is in love with Christine? With all this going on, I couldn’t help but focus on just how bad I felt for Murphy. It was well known that the star battled with drug abuse but to watch her go through it on screen for everyone to see is just awful.
“Something Wicked” is a jumbled mess that has sat on the shelves for nearly 6 years post filming and that pretty much should tell you how good it is.
