Tale of Tales: Blu-Ray Review

taleoftales

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is “Tale of Tales” which is based on three 17th-century folklore stories by Giambattista Basile.  An impressive cast that includes Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby, Jones, and John C. Reilly all help bring these tales of magic and the macabre to life.  Although gifted filmmaker Matteo Garrone creates a beautiful looking world, “Tale of Tales” is quite difficult to sit through.

I love stories of sea-monsters, kingdoms and the fantastical, but I found myself bored out of my mind here. Reilly is completely miscast in the first story as a king who must go above and beyond to give his wife a child.  Hayek however never seems miscast as she tends to fit into almost any film she is in.  Here is no exception.

There may be some who will absolutely love “Tale of Tales” and the one thing I cannot deny is its’ originality.  I just wish I could have found myself entertained by it.
