The Abandoned: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving this week on Blu-ray is Eytan Rockaway’s “The Abandoned”, courtesy of Scream Factory.  The film stars Louisa Krause (“Ava’s Possession”), Mark Margolis (“Breaking Bad”) and Jason Patric (“The Lost Boys”).

Streak (Krause) is trying to get her life back on track. On the verge of losing her daughter, the unstable young woman takes a job as a security guard in an abandoned apartment complex. The place looks more like an old museum rather than a former residence.  Working the graveyard shift in a big spooky building can put anyone on edge, thankfully Streak is joined by Cooper (Patric) a more experienced guard.

Cooper gives Streak a hard time from the start, making her first night on the job kind of rocky.  The night gets a whole lot worse when she opens a locked door that she was not supposed to and unknowingly releases some not-too-friendly spirits.  Now Streak can’t tell what is real and what is in her mind.

“The Abandoned” is fortunate to Jason Pactric who helps elevate the material. Not to knock Krause, who is good, but the scenes with Patric are when the film is at its best. “The Abandoned” doesn’t quite stand out, but it’s not bad either. There are some genuine freaky moments which is never a bad thing.
