The Babadook: DVD Review
Arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this week is the Australian horror film “The Babadook” courtesy of Scream Factory. This one is considered by many as one of the best horror films of 2014 and with good reason. Writer/ director Jennifer Kent delivers an eerie and chilling feature that it also original.
After the death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is left alone to care for her son Samuel (Noah Wiseman). When a mysterious storybook called “Mister Babadook” turns up at the house, a haunting presence arrives with it. Noah is terrified that the monster in the storybook is real and Amelia is barely holding it together dealing with her son’s increasing fear.
Granted, the performance by Wiseman and the terrified and out-of-control son can be grating, but that same performance is what helps “The Babadook” work. This is definitely a disk worth picking up for hardcore horror fans.
