The Haunting of Alice D: DVD Review
Arriving on DVD and Digital Video this week is Jessica Sonneborn’s directorial debut, “The Haunting of Alice D”, which she also wrote and stars in. My favorite Jason Voorhees, Kane Hodder is also in this flick, but in more of an extended cameo. Sonneborn has been involved in many projects over the past decade. Even though I wasn’t familiar with any of them, I had home that her extensive experience would lead to a solid piece of horror. Unfortunately, “The Hunting of Alice D” is terrible on almost every level.
The story begins in the brothel of Sr. Davenport (Kane Hodder), during the late 1890s. A young girl named Alice and her older sister were sold to Davenport by their uncle after the passing of their parents. Alice’s sister was then sold off, leaving Alice all alone and forced into prostitution. Cut to present day, the great grandson of Sr. Davenport has inherited the brothel-turned-home and he decides to invite his friends over and also hire some prostitutes. It doesn’t take long for the ghost of Alice D to make her presence known and have her way with the sinners.
I am having a hard time coming up with any positive comments for this one. There was one effective jump-scare that took place in the bathtub but aside from that, this thing is an utter bore. Not only is the acting awful, but the direction, camera work and sound is amateurish. I will admit that the house had a bit of a creepy vibe, but that is basically me stretching to find something nice to say. Avoid this one like the plague.
