The Midnight Man: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is “The Midnight Man”, starring Gabrielle Haugh (“Jeepers Creepers III”), Grayson Gabriel (“Wayward Pines”), Lin Shaye (“Insidious”), Robert Englund (“A Nightmare on Elm Street”) and directed by Travis Zariwny (“Cabin Fever” remake).  In all honesty, adding a little Shaye and Englund to anything will upgrade nearly any horror film and “The Midnight Man” is no exception.  Despite hearing mostly negative reactions from fellow horror fans, I must admit, I enjoyed this remake of the 2013 Irish film of the same name. Full disclosure, I never saw the original, but it is included as a bonus feature.

The story opens in the 1953 when a young girl and her two friends invite a supernatural demon into the house while playing the Midnight Game. Two of the children are killed, leaving Anna alive.  Cut-to-present day, Anna (Shaye) is now a grandmother and her granddaughter Alex (Haugh) has moved in to take care of her. When Alex and her friend Miles (Gabriel) find the Midnight Game in the attic, they being to play, not realizing they are inviting the Midnight Man into their lives.

“The Midnight Man” reminds me a little bit of last year’s “The Bye, Bye Man”, except this one is watchable, and has a few creepy moments.  I also liked the look and voice of the title character (Kyle Strauts).  If you are wondering how Englund fits into the film, well he plays Anna’s doctor, but he does have a bit more of a crucial role further along into the story.

“The Midnight Man” is serviceable at best. Aside from Shaye and Englund, the acting is pretty, awful and the dialogue isn’t much better.  What works here is the tone and most of the scenes involving the Midnight Man himself.  If you are a horror fan and just looking for something to pass the time, I will say that “The Midnight Man” isn’t a bad choice.
