Date with an Angel: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray for the first time is 1987’s “Date with an Angel”, which was written and directed by Tom McLoughlin (who happened to be responsible for my favorite “Friday the 13th installment, “Jason Lives”). It has been more than three decades since I had last viewed this romantic-comedy-fantasy and I truly can’t remember if I actually liked the film when it first came out.

The story centers on Jim Sanders (Michael E. Knight), an aspiring composer who is engaged to cosmetics model Patty Winston (Phoebe Cates) and is about to start the next chapter in his life. However, things get knocked off course when an angel (Emmanuelle Béart) crashes into a satellite, breaks her wing and lands in Jim’s pool. Jim wants to help the injured heavenly creature, but she does not speak a language understood by humans.  To make matters worse, Jim’s three best friends want to kidnap the angel and exploit her for profit (in the history of film, these friends of Jim’s have to be some of the biggest jerks I have ever seen). Also, Patty and her father believe Jim is having an affair with the beautiful blonde, unaware that she is actually an angel.

“Date with an Angel” even though I watched this countless times on cable back in the day, it is not a film that has held up very well over the years. The film is incredibly mean spirited for a rom-com and the performances are pretty-awful all-around. Having said that, the transfer from Kino Lorber does look quite nice and will please those who are fans of the film. McLoughlin also recorded a new audio commentary for the release.
