Nomads: Blu-Ray Review

Before director John McTiernan hit it big with action blockbusters like “Predator” and “Die Hard”, he made his feature film debut with “Nomads”, which he also happened to write. Let’s just say that there is a reason why McTiernan hasn’t written anything since then. Those of you who are fans of “Nomads”, you can find it on Blu-ray this week courtesy of Scream Factory.

“Nomads” was Pierce Brosnan’s first starring role in which he played French anthropologist Jean Charles Pommier. As the story begins, Dr. Eileen Flax (Lesley-Anne Down) is bitten on the ear by the dying Pommier, who has seemingly gone mad. That bite left a nasty side effect that could not be mended with stitches. Flax has become a vessel for Pommier’s thoughts during his final days. She is now reliving the days that lead up to his death and soon discovers the existence of the demonic spirits that Pommier had become obsessed with.

For the most part, I have been a loyal fan of McTiernan’s work. Sure, there were some duds, like “The 13th Warrior” and the needless remake of “Rollerball”, but for the most part, his films have been solid entertainment. “Nomads” however is just plain weird. Lucky for him, Arnold Schwarzenegger was such a fan, that he hired McTeirnan to direct “Predator” the following year. I can’t say that I am a fan of “Nomads” myself, but I know many are and now you have an HD version to call your own.
