RPG: DVD Review

RPG

Arriving on DVD this week is the sci-fi thriller “RPG” (Real Playing Game), directed by Tino Navarro and David Rebordão. This is another one of those titles in which the headlining star (in this case Rutger Hauer) has less than 10 minutes of screen time throughout the whole 102 minute feature. Also if you are expecting a futuristic looking movie, you will be disappointed since most of it takes places within deserted island ruins.

Steve Battier (Hauer) is a very rich and powerful man. Unfortunately all the money in the world can’t cure him of his terminal disease. Lucky for Steve, a biotechnological company has offered him a chance to be young again. The cost, aside from a few million dollars, Steve must enter a virtual reality tournament with 9 other important and powerful players from around the globe. The last player in the game to survive will win their youth.

“RPG” isn’t anything more than a group of people who are set out to kill each other in order to win, although some seem to have an easier time with killing than others. The premise is pretty generic and unoriginal, but that wouldn’t be much of an issue if “RPG” was at least entertaining, but sadly it isn’t. This virtual world is in serious need of a kill-switch.
