The Harvest: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on Blu-ray is “The Harvest”, which stars Michael Shannon, Samantha Morton, Charlie Tahan, Natasha Calis, and directed by John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). Despite being very predictable, “The Harvest” manages to be thoroughly entertaining. This is in no small part to the talented cast.
Katherine (Morton) an Richard (Shannon) live a controlled life. When Katherine (who is a Doctor) is not at the hospital, she is at home with her sick son Andy (Tahan). Richard who was a nurse, has quit his job so he can always be there for their son when Katherine is unable. Stuck in a wheelchair and not allowed to leave the house, Any is homeschooled. He is also quite lonely.
That all changes when Maryann (Calis) moves in next door with her grandparents after the tragic death of her parents. While snooping around the neighbor’s house, Maryann sees Andy through his bedroom window and decides he is going to be her first new friend. Although Richard seems to welcome the idea of Andy actually having someone to play with, Katherine wants Maryanne to stay far away. It turns out, this family has a dangerous secret and Katherine will stop at nothing to keep it that way.
“The Harvest” is a solid thriller and although McNaughton hasn’t helmed a feature film in nearly 15 years, he keeps things pretty suspenseful here. Shannon and Morton are terrific as the couple who have completely different feeling on the secret they are hiding. Tahan who you might recognize from TV’s “Wayward Pines” also does a fine job. If you are into thrillers, this is worth checking out.
