Creepshow Season 2: Blu-Ray Review
While season 3 of Creepshow premiered on Shudder this past September, we are finally getting season 2 on Blu-ray this week. While it may seem like it took some time getting here, I am happy that the 2-disk set includes both the Animated and Holiday Specials as part of the bonus content. While the first season was a hit for Shudder, I found a large chunk of the season to be underwhelming, with only a few bright spots. Season 2 however is a huge improvement.
Aside from Greg Nicotero who directs Pesticide, Model Kid, Public Television of the Dead, and Night of the Living Late Show, season 2 brings us a handful of talented filmmakers that bring the remaining tales of terror to life. Axelle Carolyn helms Dead and Breakfast, Rusty Cundieff gives us Sibling Rivalry, Joe Lynch doubles up with The Right Snuff and Pipe Screams and John Harrison directs Walls of Madness.
Just like with almost any anthology film or series, not all stories are winners, but unlike the first season, the good in season 2 outweigh the not-so-good. Some personal favorites would be Nicotero’s Model Kid which should be loved by almost anyone who loved horror as a child and Evil Dead fans are sure to get a kick out of Public Television of the Dead. Carolyn’s Dead and Breakfast give us C. Thomas Howell and Ali Larter as siblings trying to cash-in on their historical murder house and the casting here is great. Lynch’s Pipe Screams is another fun one that also gives Barbara Crampton chewing up the scenes with arguably her most despicable character.
As I mentioned before, I was pleased to see that the Animated and Holiday Specials were included. I am a sucker for werewolves and dark humor so Nicotero’s Shapeshifters Anonymous was right up my alley. While I can’t say I loved the animated Survivor Type, I did like that it definitely set itself apart from the rest of the series and glad it was a stand-alone special. If you are a Creepshow fan (movies or series), then I highly recommend picking up this release. You can also catch season 3 on Shudder.
